Trio Batá: A Method for the Solo Percussionist offers a practical and accessible approach to studying the rich rhythmic language of Cuban Batá drumming.

Designed for percussionists who want to understand—and perform—the interlocking parts of Iyá, Itótele, and Okónkolo, the book explores fundamental Havana-style Oro Seco and Oro Cantado rhythms.

A central goal of this method is to make Batá more accessible to musicians who do not read conventional Western notation. Using a clear grid-based notation system, the three drum parts are presented together, making it easier to see all the parts at once, understand where each stroke falls, and recognize how the individual rhythms interlock to create a complete musical conversation. Trio Batá is designed not simply to teach patterns, but to help percussionists develop the coordination to perform multiple Batá parts as a soloist while gaining a deeper understanding of the rhythmic language behind them.

For percussionists, educators, and students of Afro-Cuban music, Trio Batá provides a unique visual pathway into this tradition—encouraging students to see the relationships, hear the conversation, and ultimately feel the language of the three drums as one.
