Areyto

Areyto is an ensemble dedicated to performing the folkloric music and dance traditions of Puerto Rico. Founded in 2017, Areyto is comprised of some of New York’s most respected Puerto Rican musicians, singers and dancers. In the native Taíno language of Puerto Rico, Areyto is a term used to depict a ceremonial act believed to narrate and honor the heroic deeds of Taíno ancestors, chiefs, and gods. With this same level of reverence, Areyto, introduces the traditional Puerto Rican rhythms, songs and dances to public audiences as an ode to a proud and resilient lineage. Audiences are invited to share and experience folkloric art forms such as the Bomba and Plena. Along with song and dance, Areyto introduces traditional instrumentation such as the barriles (barrel-shapped drums), cuá, maracas, güiro, ten-stringed guitar known as a cuatro, and tambourines referred to as panderos. The African traditions of the Bomba and the widely diverse traditions of the Plena affirm a rich history of resilience and cross- cultural influences. With each performance, the main objective of Areyto is to showcase and expose audiences to the authentic encounter and creative relationship between dancers, percussionists and singers; For that moment, they are transported into a communal activity that still thrives in traditional centers such as Loíza, Santurce, Mayagüez, Ponce and New York City.
